The IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT) helps organizations keep track of software assets installed in their environments. Software Asset Management (SAM) uses licensed consumption data from ILMT to generate compliance reports. To do this, the following are steps:

1. Run the Discovery Job.

Run the Pull data from IBM License Metric Tool job. Utilizing ILMT and BigFix Integration, SAM collects ILMT license consumption data.

Note: Make sure you run the job before synchronizing the product family from Configuration Management System (CMS).

2. Synchronize the Product Family

  1. Click on the On-premises tab page in SAM.
  2. Click Sync from CMS to synchronize the installed software CIs in UCMDB.
Note: The product should be selected as IBM(ILMT).
  3. In the top-right corner, click on the notification icon to view the message.
  4. Click Refresh to view the list of imported products.

Synchronization of product families takes place on the back end. As a result, the time required to complete the process will depend on the number of machines in the CMS system. You will receive a notification once the synchronization is complete.

SAM synchronizes the product family every day at midnight by default.

3. Maintain License Compatibility Matrix

  1. Click on the On-premises tab.
  2. Click a product name.
  3. In the left navigation pane, click License compatibility matrix.

On the right, you can see the existing downgrade relationships between product versions and editions.

4. Configure License Rules

  1. Click on the On-premises tab.
  2. Click a product name.
This will take you to the General tab, where you can view the product details and the current version of the product.
  3. In the left navigation pane, click License rule settings.
  4. Click a product version.
You can view the default rule and other license rules available in the dialog box that appears.
  5. Select one or more license rules as required, and then click OK.One license rule: License rules are set by default to one. When you configure a license rule, it becomes the default license rule for the product. Compliance, as displayed on the Compliance page, is a calculation result based on the default rule.Multiple license rules: Some products have special versions that can be obtained based on different metrics of licensing. If you wish, you can purchase a server/CAL license for the SQL Server 2012 Enterprise edition. In such cases, multiple licensing rules can be applied. All rules you apply to user-based licenses must also be user-based license rules. When you select a rule, SAM calculates its license consumption.Note: One product version cannot have multiple rules with the same metric.
  6. In the Default value drop-down list, select one license rule as your desired default rule for consumption calculation.
  7. Click Save to save the settings.

5. Build License Pool Information

  1. In the Software coverage section, select a license metric as required. At present, SAM provides two OOTB license metrics for ILMT-managed products: RVU – IBM (ILMT) and PVU – IBM (ILMT). You can only choose between the two metrics.
  2. Select a product version.
Note: To calculate license consumption, you need to select the one that has the product name. Do not select products by version number.

6. Calculate License Consumption

  • A product with only one PVU rule configured is assumed to be the default license rule, and SAM calculates license consumption based on it.
  • If a product has only one RVU rule configured, SAM calculates license consumption according to the RVU rule.
  • SAM calculates license consumption based on the PVU rule when both RVU and PVU rules have been configured. If you want to view the consumption result calculated according to the RVU rule, change the default license rule in the Default value field to the RVU rule for IBM LMT solution.
  • SAM presents the product compliance status based on the sub-capacity regardless of the consumption results based on PVUs or RVUs.

7. View Compliance Status

You can view the compliance status of on-premises and SaaS products on the Compliance page. Based on current software and hardware information in the Configuration Management System (CMS), SAM calculates license compliance. The compliance report might need to include product compliance information within a certain timeframe for some products. SAM does not support such scenarios currently.

8. Analyze Compliance Report.

Click the Consumption analysis card on the Analysis page to view each product’s compliance information. The information provided depends on the type of licensing, whether it is device or user based.
